Good Food in Attractive Setting 1/8/2011

We have eaten at Flat Rock (Woodriff Rd.) several times over a period of at least 5 years. We have always found the food to be very good and the service polite and professional. I am always suspicious when I see such negative comments that they are done by competitors or someone with an axe to grind..doesn't seem to be in the "spirit" of sharing! Anyway I have no affiliation with this industry, just eat out a lot. The atmosphere is pleasant and a little more sophisticated than somewhere like Outback for instance but comparably priced. My favorites on the menu are the crab bisque (not sure of correct name) and I love the dinner salads that are topped with grilled salmon or steak, blue cheese crumbles and fried onion tangles. Everything I have eaten there has been very good. Pros- food & atmosphere Cons- wish the menu were broader more

EXCELLENTAY 8/22/2010

We travel all over and find this to be a good restaurant to stop in and visit on the way home. As we live in Charleston we can atest to the good seafood instead of the frozen junk that most national chains have. Life is good and their food makes it better. more

Flat Rock 12/7/2009

I've eaten at Flat Rock a few times and have never had an unpleasing experience. I think that the people that are from out of town and who aren't used to having to actually be social with people and deal with little hiccups in restaurants just need to relax. Even if you think that they aren't busy, they probably are. I have worked in a restaurant for 5 years and hate customers who complain about everything...from the wait to the way the lighting is. Seriously people...if you don't know what you are talking about...then perhaps you shouldn't talk about it at all. And just getting up and walking out of a restaurant is so rude. Pros: Great Food and Awesome Atmosphere Cons: none more

GREAT!!! 12/4/2009

My wife and I love Flat Rocke. The food is wonderful! Pros: Cedar Plank Salmon Cons: none more

Awful Experience 9/14/2009

A late evening (7:30PM) visit last Sunday night was a disaster. Few diners but yet we were seated WAY in the back, indifferent wait staff (and WE had to get the trainee!!), evening booth and floor cleanup in progress, etc. Wrong wine order - we had to go to the bar ourselves to correct the idiot wait staff mistake (who didn't drink so didn't know chard from zin). Stale coffee - had to request a new batch be brewed. Dirty plate had to be returned, Selected menu item was specific about dressings, etc. but server came and had to ask redundant "wadda' ya' want" question. HELLO . . . the kitchen staff should know what the menu specified came with the meal. And then, to close out, the Mgr. didn't even offer to comp any portion of our meals. HEY -wanna' waste $50? Then eat here. OBTW - the Smothered Talapia dinner use to be awesome - HOWEVER, this meal was only $16 awhile ago and now prices out at $22. I'd say go to Bonefish. Pros: Potentially great menu Cons: Poor Service more

Glad I didn't listen to the bad reviews!!!!!! 4/25/2009

We had eaten at the Flat Rock Grill a couple of years ago when staying in Greenville and loved it. We were going to be spending the night in Greenville again and planned to eat dinner at Flat Rock Grill . However, after reading a lot of really bad reviews on the internet, we almost went somewhere else. We finally decided to give it a try anyway and boy am I ever glad that we did! It was just as good as we remembered. The hostess and servers were all very friendly and helpful, the service was prompt, and the food was fantastic! We were expecting the worst and instead, we got the best! I will definitely eat there anytime that I am in Greenville and recommend it to anyone else. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Rude Manager/ Will never eat there again 2/28/2009

My spouse and I have eaten at Flat Rock many, many times in the past and have always taken advantage of special coupons and offers when available. So, when we received a coupon in the mail for a free appetizer with an entree, we were enticed and decided to have a pleasant lunch at Flat Rock. We have never had a problem redeeming a coupon - until today. Upon presenting our coupon, we were told that with the lunch menu, we could not use the coupon because lunch items were not entrees. When we questioned this, the server promptly sought out assistance from the manager. The manager, in no uncertain terms, reiterated that lunch is not an entree and he flatly refused to honor the coupon. We pointed out that no where on the coupon did it specify dinner only and that an entree was simply the main course of any meal. As we had planned to order an appetizer, side salad, and a lunch entree we met the requirement of the coupon. He refused to budge, The discussion was civil, but it was obvious that the manager had no tact or customer service skills. In fact, when I suggested to my spouse that we leave, the manager said, "Please!" In the times we have eaten there in the past, we have found the service to be poor, with rude staff and now I know that it filters down from the top management. The reason that we have eaten there so often in the past is because of the atmosphere and 2 dishes that we particularly like. No more. I can say with all 100 per cent surety, that I will never step foot in Flat Rock again. It is interesting that they could alienate repeat customers on a point that would probably have cost them 2 or 3 dollars. Pros: physical environment Cons: rude, argumentative, poor customer service more

Stellar Service for these out of towners! 2/3/2009

First off...every restaurant has its bad day, so to the rest of the world, lighten up. My husband and I have been to Flat Rock Grille twice. We stopped in last year on the way down from Long Island, NY on our trek to Florida. We took a chance and happened upon a very hospitable staff. We always sit at the bar when we are out and this evening was no different. We did not think anything out of the ordinary at first, but found thought the atmosphere warm and inviting, especially in January! When we got to the bar we were greeted by Erin, the bartender. She was fairly new to the restaurant when we first visited her last year in 2008. Her and the staff's attentiveness was a breath of fresh air! She new the menu and even new what to offer for pairings with what we ordered. She was how every bartender should be: friendly, focused and fun. When we left last year, we wrote her name down on the map and said we would come back to visit her. Sure enough, when we stopped back in this January in 2009, she was still there and although she did not remember our names, she did recall our face and after we reminded her of who we were, I think we shocked her that we came back just to visit with her on our trip back down to Florida this year. This goes to show that Flat Rock Grille does have good service and a stellar staff to go along with it. We hope Erin is there next year when we stop back through on the way to Florida to vacation. Favorites: Hickory Salmon, The She Crab Soup, The stuffed Flounder and the Flat Rock salad (new since last year)!!! If you want a great bar experience, visit the staff at Flat Rock Grille and ask for Erin! Pros: The Food, The bar staff, The new Menu Cons: None more

HORRIBLE SERVICE...WE LEFT!!!! 1/18/2009

My parents were in town visiting for one night, so my wife and I thought we would take them to Flat Rock for a nice dinner. I had been to the one in Charlotte(Ballantyne) several times and had great experience there. THE WOODRUFF ROAD LOCATION IS HORRIBLE! We were seated quickly...my mother is disabled and they accomodated us nicely for that. However, after sitting there 10 minutes, the waitress finally came and asked for drink orders. We asked for a bottle of wine as well as one beer. We also asked for water for each of us. About 20 minutes later, she finally comes with the WATER OINLY! She explained she couldn't get it all on one tray. She said she would soon return with the other drinks. Well, after another 15 minutes, we said we are leaving...we won't tolerate this service with the prices they ask for. As we were getting up to leave, the waitress appeared with the bottle of wine and beer. We told her to keep it, we were not happy with the slow service. She didn't seem too concerned and just said "I'm sorry..the bar is really backed up" Yeah..right! The restaurant was not busy at all! As we were leaving, I asked other patrons there about the service..they all said it was really slow. The manager stopped my wfie and father and said "You don't want to leave and go wait somewhere else to eat, I will take care of this." He said he would personally wait on us. He said he was short two servers and that is why they were slow. I'm sorry...that is not my problem....STAFF UP FOR IT!! It was not that busy! Believe me, I have a lot of friends in the area and I will pass this experience along. I will also learn to read reviews from now on as well...I could have avoided this embarrassment in front of my parents! My father is 82 years old and also said he had never seen service like that..and he has only walked out of an establishment twice before. I hope Flat Rock management reads these reviews...they need to do something about this service. Pros: NONE THAT I FOUND Cons: SERVICE IS HORRIBLE...READ THE REVIEWS! more

Sorry service 1/11/2009

I should have read the reviews before I tried to take my wife there for our anniversary. After giving our name to the little hostess we went to the bar to wait and wait and wait. The bartender even was confused as to why we had not been seated yet. When I asked for the manager/owner Donald, he apologized and said we would be seated in a few minutes. He then spoke to the hostess who lied and said she had called our name. Interesting enough where we were seated at the bar we could actually hear the conversations the two hostesses were having with one another, but somehow managed not to hear our own name being called for seating. Doesn't really work for me either. We were finally seated and the waiting process started all over again We were eventually greeted by a waitress (not even ours) that apologized and said she would take care of us. It was a pity visit. By that time there was no going back and we definitely did not want to spend our money and especially our anniversary in an establishment that had two service failures prior to even placing our order. Needless to say we requested the manager/owner, Donald, yet again to express ourselves and bring this matter to his attention. Donald doesn?t seem to be a man of many words so he just stood there with no response. When a Manger doesn't respond to a complaint, it is one thing, but when the manager /owner doesn't seem to care it's quite sad. As many restaurants as there are in Greenville to choose from, you would think there would be much better service. By the way Flat Rock, times are quite tough all around, be thankful for the customer?s you have and treat them well. Haven?t you ever heard that a happy customer only tells one person, but an UNHAPPY customer tells ten or more. I am a VERY UNHAPPY customer. Rest assured I will tell many more than ten about our horrible experience! We made the wrong choice and advise VERY strongly for others not to make the same mistake!!! Pros: nice bartender Cons: no other service more

My new favorite place!! 11/25/2008

My husband and I went to South Carolina for a short trip. Being from the mid-west, we don't have a lot of great seafood restaurants to choose from. We asked a few locals for great seafood suggestions and everyone said Flat Rock Grille. I have to say everything about this place was just fabulous. The food was some of the best I've ever had, the service was far and above the best service we've ever received, and the atmosphere was just great. Needless to say we were very happy with everything. We just wish this restaurant was closer to home!! Pros: Everything was great!! more

great food, terrible service 10/1/2008

My work team went to Flat Rock on Woodruff Rd. for lunch. The food was wonderful, the service was slow! there were 6 of us and we went @11:30. It wasn't busy @all, even during the lunch rush there were several empty tables around. It took us 20 mins to get our dessert and then we had to get it to go b/c we were already late getting back to work. The waitress was not very attentive to us. We had to keep asking for refills and bread. I would recommend for the food but don't go if you want to get in and out in a reasonable amount of time. Pros: food is great! Cons: service is terrible, very slow more

Great Experience...as always! 6/9/2008

My husband and I are frequent regulars at Flat Rock Grille on Woodruff Road. The restaurant, like most, has it good and bad days, and like most, we have experienced both. The hospitality and genuine friendliness from most of the staff is very welcoming. Having once worked in the service industry, we usually dine at the bar. The bartenders, overall, are very knowledgable about their wine list, the menu, and have an overall friendly attitude. We have been there when no one else is at the bar and when there are seats to be had. During the week for dinner, the bar is always good for a quick bite to eat. The weekends bring you double the pleasure with two bartenders and we usually go on Saturday nights. The obvious comraderie between all of the bartenders is obvious and it truly shows that they enjoy working together. Roxanne, Brandon, Erin & Krystal...thanks for all the great meals! The servers, however, are not to be ignored. Occassionally, we do choose to sit at a table or have others with us. Some of the servers have been there for several years and very professional, quick, and efficient. For an entree option we reccommend the Wasabi Tuna or any of their fresh fish. All meals are prepared to order and they are usually able to cater to most dietary needs (i.e. my no butter syndrome). Kudos to the management for all praise and concern you show to your tables. We have witness a few times, the disgruntled customers, and how the management chooses to handle those situations. They are also always helping their staff as necessary whether it's the bartenders with their tickets or the servers bussing their tables. Thank you Flat Rock! Pros: Great Service, Great Wine List, Great Fresh FisH! Cons: Need to change out some draft beers maybe? more

Worst Visit Yet 4/22/2008

I vistited the above mentioned Flat Rock Grille on April 8, 2008. A couple of friends and I went to your restaurant around 630 for dinner. We were greeted my the hostess who escorted us to our table. Once we got seated, we were greeted with our waiter ( whom I do not his name). He took our drink order (in which we all ordered waters) After coming back to our table we informed him that we needed a little bit more time to review the menu. Fifteen (15) minutes later, the waiter came back to our table because we flagged him down with a questions. He was very rude in answering our questions. A friend of mine wanted to sample your tomato Alfredo sauce since she did not like the way some tomato sauces tasted. He just stood there and ask, " Are you serious?" After telling him yes he then began to say, " You want me to go back and ask the chef if you can sample some sauce and look like a idiot doing it?" We informed him once again, yes. When he left the table, he went to another waitress and started pointing at us and talking. Ten (10) minutes later, he came back and said, " Well, Yall made me look like an idiot, the chef said, no you can not taste the sauce." We asked to speak with the chef and he told us "NO." We then decided that we were going to leave the restaurant and informed the waiter of this. His responses was, " Yall are going to waste the gas to go somewhere else where you will get a female waitress, who will not be as funny as I am." We then said, "Yes but thanks for the water." He continued on to say " Yeah, yall like that water, it is Fiji Water, we don?t use tab water like the restaurant you are about to go to." I think that they should get a better wait staff. Pros: Chicken Salad, Drinks, Bread Cons: Service more

Used to be one of the best but the new management changed that. 4/14/2008

We used to absolutely love Flat Rock, we would eat there about twice a month, sometimes more, and it was the place we took our families when they visited and wanted good food. But all that changed when the old owners were replaced. The menu was cut down in size, and some of the best items were also removed. The prices were inflated quite a bit, and the service went downhill. While the food is still good, and the restaurant has one of the best Shecrab soups, and dinner salad I have ever had, these are not worth the hassle and sometimes rude treatment by the waitestaff. If you don't mind spending a little more I would check out Blue Fire Grill, also on Woodruff Road. The ambiance is better, the service is wonderful, the food is great, and did I mention that the service was wonderful. Pros: She crab soup and house salad Cons: everything else more

HORRIBLE SERVICE! 2/1/2008

Flat Rock Grille has good food, but I've never been treated so badly in a restaurant in my life! My waitress was forgetful and negligent most of the meal, but my dining companion and I were generous and still gave her a standard tip. Before we had left the table, the waitress returned, and in a confrontational tone said, "I hope you know you didn't tip me enough." I've never been directly asked for more tip by a waitress before, especially a waitress who only came to the table once after taking our order! Appalled, my dining companion and I asked for the manager, who rolled his eyes and exchanged exasperated looks with the waitress as we lodged our complaint. His only comment, "If you don't like it, call the owners." A friend also had the same experience at Flat Rock with a waitress demanding more tip after a bad service experience. Word to the wise - don't eat in at Flat Rock!! Cons: service, waitstaff, management more

Rude employees - bad experience 1/31/2008

For our monthly Girls Night Out, the majority choose Flat Rock because it has always been a very good restaurant and we like it. Aparently the owners have changed and the differences are more than obvious. Since we had a party of 12, we called the day before and made a reservation for Thursday night. We all started leaving work and heading over. Three of us arrived first (5:20) and told the Hostess what party we were with. She said to let us know when everyone arrived and she would seat us. Since most of the group was right behind us, we asked if we could go ahead and be seated and she reminded us the reservation was for 5:30, suggested we wait at the bar. We said we would rather sit at the table and go ahead and get a drink, she again suggested we go to the bar as our res. was not until 5:30. (Let me point out it's Thursday night and the entire restaurant was totally empty.) We asked again why would could not be seated and she said the table is not ready yet. We have 12 people arriving and they haven't even setup the table yet. That's the point of the reservation! We finally went to the bar for the 5 minute wait. Ordered a drink, and then the bartender got an attitude when we wanted to trasfer our tab to the table which the hostess suggested we could do. Then after she finally setup the table - at 5:30 - and told us the table was ready. She smarted off to us as we walked by to the table. We had some minor issues with the waiter also. We called the manager over and relayed the entire story. He apologized, but did little but offer appetizers and ask us to stay, and assured the service would improve. At this point, the entire group was ready to go elsewhere so we left. We called across the street to TGI Fridays who were very packed but had a table ready for 12 people in the amount of time it took us to pay for our drinks and cross the street. We ordered, ate - great food, paid, and made it back across the street to the move in 1 hr. Pros: Food is good - if you get that far! Cons: Rude staff - terrible service. more

The Best Cuisine & Staff!!! 12/2/2007

I have worked at many different types of resturants ranging from 5star suit and tie to country dining, and this is the best resturant i have ever worked at!!! The staff, managers, and kitchen staff not only try to make the customers dining experience the best it can be but they also take care of their employees in every possible way!!! The kitchen staff works very hard to put the best meal a customer can have, and the wait staff and management work with each other to do the same for the customer. Flat Rock Grille will be opening it's doors on Tuesday December 4th, 2007. As for now we are having a friends and family night that is open to anyone who calls to make a reservation but space is limited and Monday December 3rd is the final day for the friends and family. I urge u all to try to make a reservation because we are giving u a free meal to better let the public see our great our food is and staff, but again, the free meal will end on Monday the 3rd. Our phone number is 704-542-7422. more

Excellent in everyway 11/29/2007

Excellent food, wait staff, prices good for what you get, Best she crab soup I've had, definitely will return when I'm back in the area. more

Will not be returning 11/25/2007

The food was great and so was the waiter. I however agree with one of the other reviewers. I won $100 in gift certificates from a local radio station and the restaraunt refused to honor it. I didn't fault the waiter as it was not his fault, he was just the deliverer of the bad news, but the new owners ought to know that this is not the way to earn and keep new business. I plan to tell all of my friends to not patronize this establishment. more
